The purpose of Swedish Game Awards (SGA) is to highlight, and stimulate the development of, new ideas all electronic gaming markets. The aim is also to inspire students to entrepreneurship and creative thinking. Therefore, the entries are judged on execution, fun factor, market potential and the innovation of the project.
During a year SGA organizes different events, such as industry presentations (Game Developers’ Evenings), debates (Game Developers’ Debate), game tournaments (Gamers’ Challenge), and workshops (Game Developers’ Workshop). These events allow students and other interested people to meet well-known representatives of the hardware and software industry in a relaxed environment.
Every year thousands of university students learn programming and other game development skills, and thus they are a large group of possible participants. The competition is targeted at a large number of universities and game development programs around Sweden. As a result SGA has a huge participation potential. Some universities even have participation in SGA as a mandatory part of their curriculum. As an example, winners of previous years have continued to win international acclaim through other competitions such as the Independent Game Festival.
University students generally have a very high degree of knowledge of programming, logic and mathematics, which are all important when creating games that can compete on the marketplace. This is something we within Excitera want to encourage, and we have therefore begun discussing the introduction of game development and participation in Swedish Game Awards within courses as a motivation for students around the country. We have had several entries and even winning ones that have been developed within the scope of courses at KTH and other universities around Sweden.
Using a proven concept and a lot of relevant experience, our ambition is to create a competition with a greater scope compared to earlier years!
